Mahdia is an ancient fortress capital of Tunisia and a famous beach resort. Located 125 miles south of Tunis and just 25 miles from Monastir airport, Mahdia has fascinating historic port and fortress town. Founded by the Fatimids under the Caliph Abdallah al-Mahdi in 921, the city was selected as the capital because of its proximity to the sea. The town was attacked by raiding ships in 1087 from Genoa and Pisa. The city came under Almohad rule in 1160. In the city buildings still exist from the 10th and 11th centuries which has made the city an important tourist attraction.
The safe clear turquoise water makes Mahdia a perfect destination for swimming and relaxing. Besides, the beaches of Mahdia offer plenty of water sports, a professional diving school, golf and horse riding. Here you can explore the ancient medinas full of welcoming merchants selling leatherware, silverware and carpets and other crafts. The Flamingo Golf Course located in a magnificent setting, with lakes, valleys, ancient olive trees and lush greens is sure to engulf you. Visit the El Jem Amphitheatre that can hold up to 35,000 spectators is one of North Africa’s largest colosseum where performances are still held. The town also has a museum with an excellent collection of mosaics to explore.
Out of the number of popular destinations in Mahdia do not forget to visit the Bardo- Tunisia’s greatest museum and the Carthage Museum. Mahdia holidays should be a combination of the comforts of a modern beach resort with exploring the extraordinary Medina and stopping in shady pavement cafes in squares like the Place du Claire. Other attractions include Central Mosque, the most famous mosque in the city that is known as the Great Mosque, archaeological museum and the Skifa el-Kahla that stands near the museum.
The city of Mahdia enjoys a Mediterranean type climate with sunshine all year round. So, it does not matter in which time of the year you go there, you are sure to experience a pleasant stay. April to October is the perfect time for beach holidays, while July and August are preferable for activities such as golf or tennis. Winters are mild with temperature falling to 16°C in January.
